High heels. We love and wear them for two reasons: they make us look taller and they give us the confidence we need and a sense as if we can conquer the world, if we wanted to. The only con to wearing heels? They can make your life a living hell. Trust me, I experienced that first-hand. This past Saturday night, I went to a party. Everything was fine until about 10:00 p.m. As my friends and I were walking towards the dance floor, the most mortifying thing happened. I fell. As I attempted to pick myself off of the ground, I fell again. I scraped myself terribly and my knee was bleeding out. Hell, that's not even the worst part, to tell you the truth. Almost everyone saw, and I am about 99.8% sure that the guy I have been infatuated with also got a glimpse of my fall. At that moment, I wanted to die into oblivion. Everyday I ask myself this question: What would Carrie Bradshaw do? While I was still on the ground, I instantly thought of that one episode of Sex and The City, season four, episode two, where Carrie models for a New York fashion show and falls infront of everyone, but gets up and pretends like nothing ever happened! So that's what I did, or atleast tried to do. Luckily, the sweetest girls found me and my knee in excruciating pain and helped me clean myself up. As I tried to continue having a good time with friends, my knee did not let me at all, so I guess you could say my night was ruined. Over the course of the past two days, I realized there's a lot I could have done to prevent this whole ordeal. Therefore, I thought I ought of write a blog post on the do's and don'ts of wearing high heels, so let's get started!
DO: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
Okay, this one should be pretty self-explanatory, but if you're having trouble walking with a certain pairs of heels, do NOT wear them the same night you purchase them. I already had a bit of trouble walking in the heels I wore Saturday night, and was too lazy to practice walking in my heels beforehand, and look where that got me! Next time you have trouble walking with a pair of high heels, please practice beforehand. Trust me, your feet and reputation will thank you greatly!
DON'T: Wear a Pair of Heels If They Give You Immense Pain
DON'T: Wear a Pair of Heels If They Give You Immense Pain
It is a common known fact that wearing heels hurts, a lot. Obviously, that's quite normal. But if your feet begin getting blisters, starts to throb, etc, it's time to give your feet a rest! I know, I know. It's hard not buying that sky-high pair of stilettos you have been eyeing, but health and safety comes first ladies! Rather than wearing a pair of heels that can cause permanent damage to your feet, opt for a shorter heel instead.
DO: Buy A Cute Pair of Kitten Heels!
DO: Buy A Cute Pair of Kitten Heels!
There is a common misconception that every pair of heels has to be tremendously high. I am here to tell you, that that is NOT true! I believe every girl should own at least one pair of kitten heels. Kitten heels are great because they don't give your feet any pain at all, but still give you a bit of a boost. After this weekend, I am definitely on the hunt for another pair of kitten heels!
DON'T: Run in Heels
DON'T: Run in Heels
Even if you're in an absolute rush, I strongly advise you to walk in heels and not run. Unless you're Wonder Woman, you are almost bound to fall on your ass, and trust me, that is not fun at all and it also hurts like hell.
DO: Keep Cotton Balls in Your Bag and Stuff them in The Toe of Your Heel If They Manage to Fall Off
DO: Keep Cotton Balls in Your Bag and Stuff them in The Toe of Your Heel If They Manage to Fall Off
This may sound a bit low-class at first, but trust me, this could really help you. If you get a pair of pretty pumps that are a bit spacious, you can simply apply some cotton balls to the toe or back of the heel to prevent them from falling off.
DO: Bring A Pair of Back-up Flats
DO: Bring A Pair of Back-up Flats
Unless you're a pro at wearing heels, something that I'd recommend to anyone is bringing along a pair of back-up heels in your clutch. Originally, I was thinking of bringing my nude ballet flats with me, but I thought I could make use without them. Looking back, I really should have brought those flats with me.
DO: Soak Your Feet in Cold Water
DO: Soak Your Feet in Cold Water
After a long night of dancing, something that can help your feet tremendously is leaving them to soak in cold water for about 10 minutes. This helps to reduce swelling and inflammation.
DON'T: Wear Heels That Are 3 Inches or Taller For a Long Period of Time
DON'T: Wear Heels That Are 3 Inches or Taller For a Long Period of Time
I seriously cannot count how many times I have seen girls make this mistake! While those sky-high stilettos are to die for, your feet are not. Wearing a pair of heels that are 3 inches or taller can actually have detrimental consequences on the heel of your foot, calf, and even lower back.
I never really planned on writing this blog post, but I am so glad I did. It's Monday night and I am still mortified as hell. This whole incident taught me something pretty important though, to be honest. In life, we are bound to fall, and really, that's the inevitable. What matters is that we dust ourselves off the ground and get back up.
Thank you for reading an have a great day!
With lots of love,
