As of right now, there are currently less than two days until the spookiest day of the year: Halloween! If you're anything like me, chances are, you're a major procrastinator and still don't have a costume. Whether you cannot find any more costumes at Party City or you simply want to avoid wearing a costume that exemplifies cultural appropriation, here are five chic costumes ideas that you can recreate in the span of a day or even an hour! [Side note: major thanks to my sister Ellie for helping shoot this!]
1. Frida Kahlo
1. Frida Kahlo
There is no doubt that Frida Kahlo is one of the most significant artists in all of art history. Not only was Frida an incredible artist, but she had one hell of an aesthetic.
For this costume, here's what you'll need :
- A flower headband ( I DIY'ed mine using an old headband and some fake flowers from my nearest dollar store)
- A tropical outifit- anything with leaves or bright floral patterns should be fine
- Brown sandals or huaraches
- A brown or black eyebrow pencil of some sort. Pro tip: If you're anything like me and tend to grow a bit of unibrow, you won't need to create much of a thicker unibrow. :)
2. Holly Golightly
Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's is such an iconic character in cinematic history, that her LBD (little black dress) is often associated with her character. Out of all the costumes in this piece, this one would have to be my favorite because this movie has such a special place in my heart. <3
For this costume, here's what you'll need:
- A black dress
- Pearls
- Tiara or something sparkly on your head
- A cigarette holder (hahahha I got mine at Party City for $4.99)
- Black arm-length gloves
- Black heels or flats
3. Daisy Buchanan
First of all, this isn't "A flapper girl", no, this is Daisy Buchanan or Jordan Baker from The Great Gatsby. Last Year, I was assigned to do a video project for The Great Gatsby and I went all out and got this ol' flapper dress. This is such a chic & classy costume, that you really can't go wrong!
For this costume, here's what you'll need:
- A black or gold sequined dress of some sort (doesn't necessarily have to be a flapper dress!)
- Arm-length gloves
- Cigarette holder
- A snazzy headband
4. Animal Onesie
OK, obviously the title of this piece does NOT apply to this very costume! If you're really short on time or money, just wear your PJs! If you don't have a onesie, borrow one from a friend! Not only will you have a super cool costume, but you'll also be comfortable as hell!
For this costume, here's what you'll need:
- A onesie of some sort
- Some cool kicks or matching slippers
5. A Black Feline
*sigh* If all else fails, just be a cat! This is costume is tremendously cliché, but seriously never goes out of style. This cat costume is a dime a dozen, but if you're looking for an affordable group costume, you and your gal-pals can dress up as black felines and call yourselves "The Pussycats".
For this costume, here's what you'll need:
- Black clothing
- Black eyeliner
- A cat set (I purchased a set that includes a tail, bow-tie, and ears for a dollar at my local dollar store.)
Be sure to have a fun, safe, and happy Halloween and eat lots of candy, too! Thanks for reading and make this Halloween a spooktacular one!
With lots of love,
