Vogue recently revealed it's March issue and I cannot help but to say how truly happy this makes me, so obviously I had to write about it! In its latest cover, supermodels such as Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Ashley Graham, etc. are seen smiling with one another at the beach. What makes this cover so distinctive is the fact that it shows that there is more than just one body type. For years, a majority of women around the globe have been given such unrealistic expectations of what our bodies are supposed to resemble. This industry has drastically failed not only many readers, but also our society as well. Women nowadays are often expected to have a tiny waist, toned arms, and a thigh gap and although many girls have these physical attributions, the industry has failed to show that many girls don't either. The industry has not shown reality, the reality is that there are various body types and that many women like myself obviously, have un-toned arms, larger thighs, etc. Because of the false standards we have been given, we often tend to look down on ourselves and practically torment ourselves just because we look a certain way. One of the first pieces I ever wrote on this blog was centered on the idea of self-love and as cliche as it might seem, I truly believed that it changed me. After torturing myself on a day-to-day basis, I thought of the blog post that I had just written. I began to look at myself in a different light. I realized that I didn't look like a lot of the girls I knew and that that was okay. We often forget that we are all different people and that all bodies do not look the same and that it's completely normal. I truly believe that the main reason why millions of girls are insecure about themselves is because of this industry. The fashion magazine industry has had a reputation for discriminating most body types and even using photo shop to digitally alter a person's physical appearance. As a person who has roughly dealt with numerous insecurities, it is very refreshing to finally see body diversity taking place on a magazine cover, and not just any magazine cover, it's Vogue. One of the many reasons why I have wanted to work in the fashion magazine industry (specifically at Vogue) was to truly change the norms in the aspect of the bodies that the average females are supposed to have according to numerous magazines. This is one of the many reasons why I have nothing but the utmost respect and love for Vogue and its editors (especially the woman, the myth, the legend herself, Anna Wintour!), not only because it goes in-depth in the fashion realm, but it also discusses significant issues such as body diversity and feminism. Unfortunately, numerous magazine covers encourage many women to take part in seriously harmful and unhealthy diets, that can lead to anorexia, bulimia, and in most fatal cases, even death. When prestigious magazines like Vogue promote body diversity and show that not every woman out there has a thigh gap, more and more girls are a step closer to accepting themselves for how truly beautiful they really are. At the end of the day, the best thing we can for not only ourselves, but society as well is to be loving, kind, and accepting towards one another! Please spread nothing but peace and love!
